Virtualizing Reaction of One-Dimensional Deformable Objects from Real Observation

This paper discusses ``virtualization'' for creating a virtual object that reproduces sensory information obtained from the reaction of a real deformable object under manipulation. As the first step to realize the process, this paper focuses on reproducing visual information obtained by a camera that observes the reaction of a one-dimensional deformable object manipulated on a vertical plane. The proposed method employs a one-dimensional mass-spring model to represent the real object and formulates the problem as constraint satisfaction for both the internal constraint of the model itself and the external constraint given as the observed visual information. The values of the model parameters are acquired by optimization algorithm, which can be realized as parallel processes, for those constraints.
